Life is an adventure, you never really know what will happen next. In the last two months my life has completely changed. On September 25th I left my job as a digital tech and embarked on a journey of faith. As October began so did my first classes of seminary. In one weekend God took my plans and rearranged them. God told me to GO! Within the next month and a half I prepared to go to Chile, packed up my apartment and left the safe, comfortable life I have enjoyed. I arrived in Puerto Montt, Chile on November 19th trusting that God would take care of my every need. On thing I have found in traveling is that each time I go somewhere my identity gets reevaluated. It is like God is giving me opportunities to see if my identity is in Him or if I have allowed myself to let my environment, history, talents, family or job define who I am. This time I have been slapped with the realization that I have placed a lot of my identity in Peru and the years I lived there. When I first moved to the US as an 18 year old I did not want to loose my Cusco accent when speaking Spanish and I knew that my English accent has a tendency of adapting to whatever the accent is around me. Therefore, I have been very guarded about when I speak Spanish. Turns out after not speaking in Spanish very much over the last 8 years has made my mouth not want to cooperate with me and I have lost my Cusco accent anyway. Coming to Chile and having to speak and think in Spanish again has been an identity struggle because I have had to recognize that I have become very American over the years. What are you allowing your identity to be rooted in? Are we allowing ourselves to be malleable in the hands of God or do we have to break to change? My identity has gone through so many changes over the years. My prayer is that I can let go of the things that are selfish and prideful and allow God to mold me into His image more and more each day. “Yet Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter;
